Are you looking for a way to turn your iPad or iPhone into a legendary composition notebook? Check out these dedicated designs.

Let me start with a disclaimer. On Amazon, you can find composition notebook cases on Amazon for almost every iPhone and iPad model, but this post is not about them.

Below, you will see composition book designs I have created myself.

Just like you, I’m in love with the legendary composition notebook design. The thing is that I can hardy find the one that I would like to buy. Most designs available online are flat, obvious, and designed without passion.

What is a composition notebook?

A composition book is a writing notebook that consists of a stiff cardboard cover and contains around 100 pages of ruled paper.

There are thousands of cover designs available on composition notebooks, but nothing beats the iconic, old-school, black and white pattern.

The pseudo-marbling composition notebook pattern emerged in Western Europe in the mid-19th century. However, the origins of this timeless design, that’s loved by users all over the world, date back to the 12th century Japan.

Japanese artisans were creating decorative marble paper in a technique called Suminagashi – by blowing the pigments onto the surface of the water to produce spiraling designs.

Obviously, many other marble paper designs were used to produce notebook covers. Some of them – although not as legendary as the original speckled pattern – are breathtaking, naming only a few examples digitized by the Bergen Public Library, shown below.

An inseparable part, and something that completes the beauty of the composition book, is its label. Crafted, cut, and stamped by hand, it’s a proof that everything you write inside is exceptional – especially if you add your own handwritten text.

There is also one thing that makes the composition notebook as unique as you are: the signs of wear.

A new shiny composition notebook is just a notebook with a beautiful pattern. The more you use it, the more unique and your own it becomes.

And here comes the problem. Most composition notebooks available online are ugly, lifeless, and come with stunningly similar label designs. And 99% of them are in one of the three mainstream colors: black, red, and purple.

I decided to change that. In the last few months, I have developed four sets of composition notebook designs that are meant to give you an old-school feel and human touch.

All the following designs are available in my Zazzle and Redbubble collections. You can get them on an iPhone or iPad case, as well as a tablet sleeve.

Composition notebook designs to choose

At first, it looks like a “standard” composition notebook.

However, I spent a lot of time to find the right balance between light and dark elements, and eliminate repetitive parts.

I turned the artwork into a seamless pattern so that I can use it on larger products, such as leggings, throw pillows, or tote bags.

Moreover, the light color in not 100% white. It has a natural warm shade of an old paper. Take a closer look, and you will see an actual paper texture on and around the label.

The label is created to resemble handmade classic designs, with printing imperfections and signs of wear.

The design is available with or without a label in many colors. You can pick up blue, orange, brown, olive green, or red among others.

This rich and complex marbled paper texture is based on one of the photos from the already mentioned Flickr collection of the Bergen Public Library.

I have fine-tuned the pattern to b suitable for seamless repetition, and reduced unnecessary, attention catching spots.

The label is a replica of the 18th century handmade labels, with prominent stripes made with color ink. The abbreviation “VNTG” stands for “vintage”. It’s intended to be an easy-to-find name for all vintage designs I offer.

Printing imperfections and signs of wear are here for the same reason as in the preworn jeans – to make the artwork look unique right after you get it.

So far, there are five color options to choose from: green, black, brown, purple, and viva magenta. You can also have them without a label, in case you’d want to use your own.

This light and positive design is combined from several layers of paper textures, mulberry patters, and grass particles.

To give it a modern, minimalist look, I have designed the labels with a large engraved flower in a color corresponding with the background. The serif, timeless typeface says “Notes & Doodles”.

You can choose from five colors: yellow, pink, gray, brown, and blue. Again, you can pick up a variant with or without a label. The latter one gives you more options when it comes to customization.

When browsing the web, you can find a few composition notebooks with a dominant black or dark color. They are especially ugly. It’s because the original pseudo-marbling pattern is designed with color harmony in mind.

That’s why I created a dark composition notebook design from scratch. I used an organic pattern, and gave it a three-dimensional look. The first variants are meant to feature a precious metal look.

There are three variants to choose from – and they are designed to go well with iPad and iPhone: gold, rose gold, and silver.

The label resembles a metal plate. The logo “Blaze Horse” comes with a tagline “Crafted with passion.” Because you don’t always have to see the text “composition notebook” on a composition notebook.

As in other designs, you can also get the pattern without the label.

Composition notebook iPad sleeves

A way to bring the composition notebook feel to your iPad is getting a sleeve instead of a case.

Why a sleeve? The biggest problem with dedicated iPad covers is that they are usually compatible with a single generation of a single iPad model. On the contrary, you can use a decent sleeve much longer than just a year or two.

Find composition notebook sleeves on Zazzle

Tablet sleeves on Zazzle cost between $24 and $32, and they are available in three sizes: for 10, 13 and 15-inch devices. You will be able to use the largest one with your MacBook, too.

Go to my Zazzle Composition Notebooks collection, and browse through available products to spot the iPad sleeve of your choice.

Alternatively, you can start browsing from this composition notebook sleeve that’s a part of my classic collection.

Find composition notebook sleeves on Redbubble

Redbubble also offers the sleeves that come in sizes that fit both the iPad and MacBook.

The 12-inch sleeve, which is perfect for iPad Pro, costs around $40. If you are subscribed to Redbubble newsletters, you can be notified of deals that reduce the price by even 30-40%.

To find the above featured composition notebook sleeves for your iPad or Mac, go to the Redbubble Composition Notebook collection, select “Accessories” from the left sidebar, and then “Tech Accessories”.
