Your bright smartphone screen is engineered like a casino machine. If you want to cut daily distraction without buying a secondary dumbphone, turning your iPhone or iPad display grey is a great place to start.

Have you ever noticed how your phone display looks less like a useful tool and more like a brightly lit slot machine in a cheap casino? Every single icon is saturated on purpose. They want your attention, and they usually get it.

I wrote about the latest obsession with the e-ink aesthetic, where tech enthusiasts are quietly stripping all colour from their devices. Why are we doing this? Because our focus is completely shot.

But let’s be realistic. You still need to check your bank account. You need train tickets. You need two-factor authentication just to log into your work email. The idea of buying a secondary dumbphone sounds romantic, but carrying two devices in your coat pocket gets annoying very quickly.

So what is the alternative? You do not need new hardware. You just need to make the screen you already own look so dull that your brain stops asking for another hit of quick dopamine.

When you turn your display grey, something strange happens. Instagram suddenly looks like a dull local newspaper from thirty years ago. Is a grey app icon still tempting? Not really. The screen becomes a practical utility again, rather than an endless source of cheap entertainment.

It is a simple trick for screen-free time that actually works in real life. By the way, these settings work on your iPad as well, which is helpful if you use a tablet for evening reading and want to cut down on visual noise before sleep. You do not need massive willpower when your display stops screaming for attention.

Here is how you can easily convert your iPhone or iPad into a quiet, monochrome device using basic built-in tools.

How to make your iPhone screen greyscale

Step 1: Open the Settings application on your iPhone and scroll down slightly to tap Accessibility.

Step 2: Select Display & Text Size from the options listed under the Vision section.

Step 3: Tap Colour Filters, which is usually turned off by default, and toggle the switch at the top of the menu to green.

Step 4: Ensure Greyscale is selected as the active filter, which immediately removes all saturation from your display.

Step 5: To make the screen look more like a genuine e-ink display rather than just a dull monitor, go back one step to Display & Text Size and turn on Reduce White Point.

Step 6: Adjust the percentage slider for Reduce White Point to around 50% dim the harsh modern backlight glow.

How to quickly toggle greyscale on the iPhone

Switching off all colour on your screen may feel strange in the beginning. Your brain misses that constant visual noise, doesn’t it?

That is why you need a quick way back. Setting up a side-button shortcut lets you check a colourful photo or payment app in a second, without giving up on your minimalist experiment completely. Here is how to do it on the iPhone:

Step 1: Go back to the main Accessibility menu, scroll right to the bottom, and select Accessibility Shortcut.

Step 2: Tap Colour Filters to enable accessibility shortcut for this function.

From now on, you will be able to instantly toggle the monochrome view on and off by triple-clicking the side power button.
