All generations of iPad Pro are compatible with iPadOS 16, as well as iPad mini and Air from 2019 or later, and basic iPad from 2017 or later.

iPadOS 16 release date is October 24, 2022. However, many iPad users (including me) have got the wrong impression that the new operating system is already there.

It’s because the news media and tech bloggers have been covering iPadOS 16 new features since July 2022. It’s when the public beta was released.

You have read all of this:

  • “iPadOS 16 finally gets the Weather app”
  • “Collaboration is the new killer feature of iPadOS 16”
  • “Here are all the key enhancements in the iPadOS 16”

Then, on October 18, 2022, Apple released upgraded iPad Pros, as well as the all-new iPad 10.9. The devices themselves (especially the Pros) are not a huge step forward, so the iPadOS 16 became more important than before.

So, when you take your 5-year old iPad Pro 10.5, go to the Settings, tap “Software Update,” and check for the new update, you will see you can update the device to iPadOS 15.7 the latest. “Oh,” you may think, “my iPad is not compatible with iPadOS 16.”

Calm down. If you have bought your iPad Pro in 2015 or later or iPad in 2019 or later, you can enjoy all the benefits of iPadOS 16 on it. Just make sure to enable automatic updates or check the Settings after October 24, 2022.
