For the 14th consecutive year, the Global Innovation Index named Switzerland the world’s most innovative country.
In the ongoing fight for world domination, neither the USA nor China are the leaders in innovation. Switzerland is.
The World Intellectual Property Organization has just released The Global Innovation Index 2024, which captures the innovation performance of 133 countries and tracks the most recent global innovation trends.
The Global Innovation Index (GII) assesses each economy based on seven pillars: Knowledge & Tech Outputs, Human Capital & Research, Business Sophistication, Market Sophistication, Creative Outputs, Infrastructure, and Institutions.
These pillars encompass a total of 78 indicators, such as patent applications, researchers per million population, knowledge-intensive employment, and more.
Here are the key findings from the GII 2024.
Most innovative countries in 2024 – highlights
▸ Switzerland ranks 1st in the GII for the 14th consecutive year. It ranks 1st in Knowledge and technology outputs and Creative outputs. It also ranks in the top 5 of all the other GII pillars.
▸ The United States scores best in the world in nine of the 78 GII 2024 innovation indicators. It ranks 1st in the quality of its universities and the impact of its scientific publications.
▸ China is not the leader in the South East Asia, East Asia, and Oceania region. It ranks 3rd, after Singapore and South Korea.
▸ Singapore is the 4th most innovative country in the world, with the greatest number of GII indicators ranking 1st in the world for the first time, overtaking the United States.
▸ In the global ranking, Sweden and the United States maintain their respective 2nd and 3rd positions for the second consecutive year. The USA jumped to the second place in 2022, going back to the 3rd the next year.
