The new infographic puts together the most recognizable phones used in Hollywood movies, creating a fascinating evolution of mobile technology.
From classic flicks to modern blockbusters, phones have played a starring, and sometimes an essential role, in the movies and TV shows. But, do you remember any of them?
What was the first mobile phone in a movie? The first video phone? Do you remember the phone used in the Matrix? Can you guess when the wall video phone was shown in a movie, and which movie was it?
The Ooma team explored the evolution of phones on the big and small screens. They have released a fascinating infographic which rounds up the most significant phones in pop culture.
Mobile phone technology has advanced significantly since its invention in 1973, so the inclusion of a phone in a movie or TV show can help creators establish the setting or even make a production seem outdated.
Here are a few fun facts from the infographic:
∙ The first video phone was used in the movie Metropolis in 1927. The large, wall-mounted device had several dials that could control call location frequency and video quality.
∙ In 2001: A Space Odyssey, a video telecommunications device was used in industrialized areas of Earth and on Space Station V.
∙ In Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), James Bond was equipped with an Ericsson JB988, featuring touch pad remote control for his BMW, 20,000 volt taser, and a fingerprint scanner.
∙ The phone used in The Matrix movie, released in 1999, was Nokia 8110. This particular model was selected because it was one of few well-known cell phone models at the time – and the film was intended to resemble an alternate 1999.
